The next morning, Hugh left early for the hospital, but brought Dora tea and toast in bed before he did. ‘Now remember what Doctor Hugh has prescribed,’ he said, bending down to kiss her. ‘Bed rest all morning, then nothing more than light duties around the house. Or better still, curl up with a book by the fire.’

‘I’ll be good,’ she said, reaching for the toast, thickly spread with butter and marmalade. But after she’d eaten it and drunk her tea, she began to wonder what might greet her in the office if she didn’t go in for another day. The begging letters had been piling up before she left and she knew how many more arrived with each delivery. She swung her legs out of bed and made a plan. After a relaxing bath she’d go in for just a couple of hours. Then she could easily be back for the afternoon and Hugh would never even know she’d disobeyed his instructions.

An hour later she caught a bus to Bloomsbury House to begin work. As she’d expected, trays of post awaited her, even though Alice had been processing requests every day in her absence. She began opening envelopes and had barely read more than a couple when Brenda came into the office. Clearly, she hadn’t felt the need to take time off either after their long journey back from Berlin the day before.

‘Aah good, there you are. I’d just tried telephoning you at home. I thought you were going to take the day off.’

‘I was, but I couldn’t really relax. I slept like a log but this morning I thought I couldn’t sit at home doing nothing, knowing all this was piling up here. It just didn’t feel right.’

‘Good for you. But leave that for the moment. You’ve had a call from the embassy in Berlin. Someone called Rufus Carrington. Wants you to call him back as soon as you can.’

‘Oh, that’s the lovely chap who helped me get permission to see Verity. He must have some news. I’ll try ringing him right away.’ Dora knew that it sometimes took a while to book an international call, so in the meantime she began imagining all the developments Carrington might be able to report. She hoped fervently that it would be good news and that he was phoning to tell her Verity had been released and Raven had been found innocent of any plot.

Nearly an hour later, she was put through to the embassy and listened to the frustrating clicks and hisses on the line until Carrington answered the call. ‘Hello,’ she said. ‘What’s happened? I hope it’s good news.’

‘Some of it is,’ he said. He sounded very sombre. ‘Your cousin has been released.’

‘Thank goodness for that. How is she? Do you know?’

‘She’s in hospital. And I don’t know how long for.’

‘I knew that prison wasn’t good for her. I could see she wasn’t in great health when we met that day.’

‘No, it isn’t just that. Well, I mean, the prison conditions weren’t conducive to good health.
